Who is Jana Slav?

Teaching Experience

My name is Jana, formerly Slavíková, now Lišková, and I have been working as a private tutor of English and Czech for foreigners since 2004.

It was mostly English at the beginning, to earn extra money while studying International Relations and Diplomacy at the University of Economics in Prague. At first, I was teaching children in kindergartens – to gain experience in working with such small children and be able to get a job as an au-pair in Great Britain. Working with such young children was hard at times, but greatly rewarding and fun overall. (It was through language school Avis, http://www.avispraha.cz/, which had a detailed programme and very good support for teachers.)

After that, I spent 11 months in the UK, working, exploring and learning English – and left London with the Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (grade A).

Back in the Czech Republic, I needed to complete my university degree, but also continued working as a tutor of English – mostly to teenage or adult students at that point, and especially individual lessons, but also groups at a private secondary school.

Nevertheless, I felt that my level of English was falling, not practising it myself, and to be quite honest, teaching it was often frustrating, as many students were only having lessons because their company required them to, and paid for it, but those people didn’t have time to learn and, more importantly, many opportunities to actually use what they were learning.

As a result, when I was offered to teach a foreigner Czech for the first time back then, I took a chance. I bought my first textbook and started learning how to teach my mother tongue – not the way it’s taught to native speakers, but in a way a foreigner can grasp…

Teaching Czech for Foreigners

That was in 2008, and since then, I’ve switched to teaching exclusively Czech for foreigners. Why? It’s more fun! No, seriously – most of my students are much more motivated to learn – they might have a Czech partner, they live in the Czech Republic, they’re rediscovering their Czech roots… Or it’s simply a hobby for them!

I might not answer all their linguistic questions (“Why do you say it like that? What is the rule?”), I did not study linguistics at a university. Nevertheless, I’m an enthusiast, and I’ve been listening to audio lectures by prominent linguists, reading articles and books, I became a member of the Association of Teachers of Czech as a Foreign Language, and I have attended many conferences and workshops. And after all that, I come to realize that it’s not just me – that even all those university-educated people often don’t know! So I don’t have to feel bad when I say “I don’t know. I don’t think there is a rule. You just have to learn and remember that.”

My (Language) Skills

I speak English fluently, Russian and German on an intermediate level, and know some basics of Spanish and French. However, along the “Use it or lose it.” line, I currently only speak English and Russian. Still, having knowledge of the other languages helps when I encounter speakers of them.

I am also eager to know about cultural differences. After my first university master’s degree, I started studying an MA programme called “Migration and Intercultural Relations” (transformed to www.emmir.org), and although I failed to complete it, it broadened my horizons a lot. And I keep learning, for example through www.coursera.org, through which renowned universities and professors offer amazing courses for free!

What I Can Offer

Whether you need Czech for everyday life, to prepare for studying at university, or to pass an exam (e.g. for a permanent residence permit in the Czech Republic, or Czech citizenship), these are the areas where I can help.

I have taught people from all continents (well, not from Antarctica yet…), programmers, artists, managers, language teachers, school children… Individually or in groups, in person or via Skype.

Vzdělání a zkušenosti

Jmenuji se Jana, dříve Slavíková, teď Lišková, a vystudovala jsem mezinárodní vztahy a diplomacii na Vysoké škole ekonomické v Praze, ale odjakživa mě bavily a zajímaly jazyky. Strávila jsem rok ve Velké Británii, kde jsem pracovala a úspěšně složila Cambridgeské zkoušky (úroveň Proficiency). Po návratu jsem si přivydělávala výukou angličtiny, ale nakonec jsem se rozhodla věnovat se výuce češtiny pro cizince.

To bylo v roce 2008. Od té doby jsem se už setkala se studenty z nespočtu zemí (USA, Británie, Nový Zéland, Austrálie, Kanada, Rusko, Moldávie, Ukrajina, Bělorusko, Francie, Maďarsko, Indie, Egypt, Malajsie, Thajsko, Brazílie, Peru, Čína, Taiwan, Německo, Španělsko, Itálie, Japonsko, Vietnam…) a učila je jak individuálně, tak ve skupinách, intenzivně i dlouhodobě, osobně i přes Skype, dospělé i děti.

Proč se cizinci učí česky?

Mnozí přijíždějí (nebo chtějí přijet) do Česka studovat, někteří pracovat, ale mnozí také kvůli českému partnerovi nebo partnerce. A pak jsou tu tací (a ti mají můj největší obdiv), kteří se učí česky prostě jen tak – protože je to baví. Anebo proto, že mají české kořeny, ke kterým se chtějí vrátit.

Jak učím?

Pokud se jedná o začátečníky z neslovanského prostředí, používám jako zprostředkovací jazyk angličtinu, ale mám i určitou znalost němčiny, základů francouzštiny a španělštiny. Poměrně obstojně znám i ruštinu, ale u studentů, jejichž rodný jazyk je slovanský, už od začátku používám téměř výhradně češtinu. Nicméně jsem si už vyzkoušela i výuku bez zprostředkovacího jazyka, když jsem učila česky děti z Číny či Vietnamu.

Co učím?

Co studenti potřebují? V mém případě se jedná hlavně o toto:

Češtinu pro život – aby se domluvili v obchodě či restauraci, s rodinou partnerky či partnera, s přáteli apod.
Češtinu pro studium – aby složili přijímací zkoušky na vysoké školy, uměli diskutovat a psát. (Něco jiného je čeština pro školy – děti, které chodí na české školy, mají zcela jiné potřeby.)

Proč učím?

Proč učím, když jsem češtinu nestudovala? Protože mě to baví a zajímá. Setkávám se se zajímavými, inteligentními, ambiciózními a kreativními lidmi, kteří měli touhu a odvahu opustit svou rodnou hroudu a vydat se do světa. Díky nim a jejich očima se mohu na svůj jazyk, svoji kulturu a zemi – a na celý svět dívat s odstupem a vidět je z jiných perspektiv.

Absolvovala jsem jednoletý kurz pro učitele češtiny pro cizince pořádaný Ústavem jazykové a odborné přípravy Univerzity Karlovy, byla jsem členem Asociace učitelů češtiny pro cizince a neustále se vzdělávám.

S přípravou na studium bohemistiky Vám tedy nepomohu (mohu však doporučit své známé / kolegy), ale co umím, to Vás naučím, a co neznám, to vyhledám a sama se přiučím.
